MY FIRST CAR BOOT SALE
After seeing a programme on the telly with a lady in an evening dress making hundreds of pounds for people in a car boot sale,my friend Sally & I decided to have a go. We spent all week rummaging about in the garage and taking things off shelves to sell," This should fetch a few quid" said Sally as she got my favourite teaset out of the cupboard.I know I never used it but aaaah."Teddy bears always go well" said the redoubtable Sally as she removed my dear old friend from the bedroom. So we decided to invest in a couple of pasting tables as this seemed to be the norm and aso we were all ready to make our fortune.

We arrived at the car boot sale at the crack of dawn (well 6.30) to be precise, thinking we would be the first there to get a good space.Well we weren't,Other cars were already laid out and surrounded by buyers. It was freezing cold and we wished we had put more layers on! We hurriedly opened the boot and struggled to put up our tables and then whoosh! we were surrounded by bargain hungry regulars asking "got any mobile phones? records?jewellery? " etc.etc.

We put our carefully wrapped treasures on the table to unwrap and turned around to find tough looking men grovelling in our car boot whilst those in front "stirred" over the contents of the boxes. Then good old Sally took over as she told me to close the car and started laying things out on the table.each item being grabbed by an 'owmuchissit?" After selling one wooden box,we tried to make some sense of the display as the throng moved on as one to the poor old lady struggling to put up her ancient pasting table next to us. My lovely china teaset took pride of place and I was thrilled when a lady asked the price.£30 I confidently said." Will you take 15 for it"she asked, when I said I couldn.t let it go for less that £25 she walked off without a word. I sold a pair of shoes for £1.50 and a casserole for a Pound and watched as Sally talked people into buying almost all her old clothes.

On the way to getting us some well needed hot coffee(should have bought a flask) I spotted a rather nice pair of curtains, quite nice for the spare bedroom and only £20. Sally was appalled "Just as well I sold your old motheaten teddie for 50p" she said - gulp. We watched as the old lady sold endless bits of china and old saucepans whilst telling people making silly offers to "****** off!"

The morning wore on as streams of people walked by,their eyes glazed over as they munched on disgusting looking objects that looked like a pound of greasy onions stuffed into a wad of dough. This wasn't they way it was on the telly! I managed to sell a few more "bits" I couldn't resist the lovely Hydrangea, the plant man was selling, only £6.

"Let's count the money" said Sally as we started the laborious task of packing away nearly everything we had brought. "I've got £85" said Sally triumphantly. "I haven't counted yet" I lied as I found I had the grand total of £19.45 "owmuchissat" said the old lady as she eyed my precious teaset "£20" I said in desperation " Nah,I'll give you a tenner "she offered. As I saw it go I hoped it had increased my takings a little. But with the cost of a pasting table, entrance fee, coffee, petrol,a pair of curtains and a Hydrangea -let's say it was -an EXPERIENCE!...............Jean Davies
